 | The Doctors
The practice consists of six doctors, five full time and one part
time.

Dr Philip J Turner BMedSci BMBS DipGUM MRCGP Nottingham
1987
Dr Philip Turner qualified in 1987 at Nottingham Medical
School and, prior to joining the practice in 1994, worked
in junior hospital posts in Derby, Stoke on Trent, Doncaster,
Chester, North Wales and New Zealand. These jobs included
general medicine, general surgery, rheumatology, orthopaedics,
obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, genito-urinary medicine,
ear, nose and throat, accident and emergency and a formal
vocational training programme for general practice. Dr Turner
maintains a clinical interest in soft tissue and joint problems
and "health informatics" - the use of computers
to allow GPs to keep a better record of patients' medical
history, especially when they are more complex with many specialists
involved. The practice has kept at the forefront of this area
of technology, and Dr Turner has been asked to be an assessor
for the Department of Health "IM&T enhanced service"
- a scheme that checks GP practices on their quality of medical
data keeping. He is also the clinical lead for Practice based
Commissioning for Biddulph & Kidsgrove and "GP Clinical
Champion" for redesign of eyecare services in North Staffordshire
in line with the "Fit for the Future" project.
Dr
Turner likes to keep physically fit in his spare time by walking
and, especially, cycling (when his young family allows him
to). He has an increasing interest in home automation, elementary
electronics and renewable energy technology, and is also an
occasional bell ringer, and jazz fan.

Dr J Graham Johnston MB ChB Birmingham 1979
Dr Graham Johnston joined the practice in 1997.
A Lancashire lad originally, he worked as a partner in a training practice in Bangor North
Wales before moving to the Midlands. Having qualified in Birmingham he and his wife moved to
Anglesey in 1980 for six months - 17 years later they were still
there! Graham takes part in the practice diabetic clinic with
Sister Pickles.
Graham and his wife Ann have three
children and a Jack Russell dog. His hobbies include sailing, playing
squash and supporting Derby County (he signed a "love me, love my
team" agreement with his wife when he married her) |

Dr Catherine M Aitken MB ChB DRCOG Liverpool 1986
Dr Aitken joined the practice just after getting married in 1993.
She had previously trained at Liverpool Medical School and subsequently
hospitals in Warrington and on the Wirral. She has experience in
paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, accident and emergency and care of
the elderly. She maintains clinical interests in child health and
family planning

Dr
Roland Bender MRCGP, German Staatsexamen, Munich 1999
Dr Bender was brought up in a small market town to the west of
Munich. Following graduation from University in1999 he started work in
Dudley, followed by posts in Falkirk, Douglas and Leicester where he
finished his GP training in 2004. After widening his experience through
locum work he felt it was time to settle and joined the surgery in June
2006. His hospital jobs included Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology,
Psychiatry, Accident and Emergency as well as care of the elderly.
Away from work, Dr
Bender and his wife Alice have a wide range of interests, especially in
travelling, gardening and spending time outdoors. They also share the love
of good company, food and wine

Dr Shaban Bokhari MBBS MRCGP
|
Dr Bokhari was brought
up in Pakistan.
After her graduation in 2000 she came to UK and started her training
in Birmingham,
then did medical rotation from Dudley which included renal medicine,
gastroenterology, elderly/stroke medicine and Accident and
Emergency. After getting married in 2004 joined East
Birmingham GP VTS scheme and finished GP training
march 2007.

 | Practice Nurses
Sandra Pickles, Practice Nurse
|
Sandra completed her training at Macclesfield District General Hospital in
1983, as a child she had always wanted to be a nurse. From 1984 Sandra
worked at Congleton War Memorial Hospital, returning after the birth of her
son, Tom, eventually leaving to have her daughter, Sam. Sandra became a
practice nurse for the Medical Centre in April 1992. In that time she
has attended many courses associated with Practice Nursing. Her
special interests are in coronary heart disease, diabetes and asthma, for which she holds Diploma
certificates. Sandra runs clinics for the surgery in these
areas. Sandra also sees clients for advice and support in smoking
cessation, weight reduction, healthy eating, exercise etc.
Sandra's husband is the Sales
Director for Siemens Automation and Drives in Manchester.
They have two children.
Sandra's
hobbies include reading, keeping fit, foreign travel and DIY - her husband would also
like her to join him on the golf course. She is interested in archery
but only manages to compete on holiday. |

Mrs Corinne V. M. Salt Practice
Nurse
Corinne started her nursing career in 1969 and has worked in various
local hospitals over the years. After successfully completing a
Diploma in Nursing (Keele 2002) she decided on a transition from hospital to
community nursing and commenced her practice nurse role at a surgery in
Chesterton. It was at this time that her interest in respiratory
disease was born. Whilst still at Chesterton she completed courses on
Asthma/COPD Management at Level III.
Corinne joined biddulphdoctors in 2004 as a Practice Nurse with a special
interest in respiratory management. In 2007 she completed the ARTP
Certificate in Spirometry which gave her the expertise to perform lung
function tests in the surgery. At present she is working towards BSc (Hons)
Respiratory Care at University Liverpool.
Her hobbies are shopping and listening to classical music, her favourite
composer is Mozart.
Louise Smith, Triage and Minor Illness Nurse
Louise completed her nurse training at Macclesfield District General
Hospital in 1990. She subsequently worked in Accident
and Emergency followed by Acute Medicine. In 1995 Louise left
to work at the Congleton War Memorial Hospital Minor Injury Department.
She still works part time at the hospital, treating minor injuries
and nurse triage for the Out of Hours Service. Louise
is married to Neil and they have two children, Laura and Jack.
Her hobbies are walking (favourite walks are in the Lake District
and Dovedale), ready and helping on the family farms.
Julie Bates, Health Care Support Worker
Julie joined the practice in May 2005. She has previously worked in
the Haywood Walk-in Centre where she gained experience working with minor
illness/injury She has also worked in the fields of paediatrics, ear, nose
and throat medicine, general surgery, burns and plastic surgery. Julie
has a particular interest in wound care and dressings. Out of work her
hobbies include reading, keep fit, card making and crafts.
Mrs Diane Arkle Health Care Support Worker
Diane joined biddulphdoctors in September, 2007. She had previously
worked for six years at the North Staffordshire Maternity Hospital where she
assisted the Midwives both in the hospital and in the community. She gained
her NVQ 2 and 3 in both Care and Maternity and Paediatric Care. She has also
worked with the elderly both in Nursing Homes and the community and with
learning disabilities. Diane works alongside the doctors in the Diabetic
clinic and with the practice nurse in the child immunisation clinic. She
also sees patients for ECGs, blood pressure and venepuncture.
Diane is married with two sons and out of working hours she enjoys
reading, walking and eating out.

 | Practice Manager
Mrs Jill Eardley
Jill has worked at the practice since May, 1983 and has been the Practice
Manager since November, 1989. During that time Jill has seen
numerous changes within general practice. She obtained her Diploma
in Practice Management in 1987.
Jill has been
married to her husband Neil since 1988 and they have one daughter
Bethany and two Schnauzers. Neil is the Manufacturing Manager
at Siemens, Congleton.
In their leisure time
Jill and Bethany enjoy supporting Neil in his life long love of motocross.
She likes to walk, cycle and swim when time allows and enjoys skiing and
foreign holidays.

Deputy Practice Manager

Dawn Phipps Dawn
has worked at the practice since 1991. Dawn, as well as working as
Deputy Practice Manager, organises the surgery rotas, the carers' register,
the child health surveillance clinics and health and safety policies.
She helps the practice manager with the day to day tasks making the surgery
run efficiently.

Jo Brown is our senior receptionist and has been with the practice since 1994,
following an evening class medical receptionist course at Cauldon
College. Her duties include general reception, data entry,
administrating the carers' register and costing the insurance and claim forms.
Wendy Derricott has been with the practice since 1999, initially as a
part time receptionist. Wendy now works full time as a
receptionist/electronic data information administrator. This involves
checking laboratory links which deliver laboratory test results from the
hospital to the surgery. During 2003/4 Wendy successfully trained as a
Phlebotomist.
Lyn Goodwin has been with the practice since 1999, initially part
time but now full time. Lyn's duties involve general reception and
read coding for medical statistics.
Judith Johnson has been with the practice since 1998- most
of which she says she has thoroughly enjoyed! Her duties include
general reception work as well as monitoring the out of hours calls
to the Doctors' Cooperative and patients' INR and warfarin
levels. Out of work Judith enjoys walking, gardening, skiing
and horse riding.
Paula Yates joined the practice in January 2005 to become a part-time
member of the Reception staff. Her main duties are dealing with the
public in reception and over the telephone. Maintaining patient
records is also a very important area of her position within the practice.
Jayne Shropshire has been with the practice since March 2005, working
as a part time receptionist. Jayne's duties include general reception
work as well as dealing with district nurse prescriptions. She is
married to Mick and has one daughter and two step daughters. In her
spare time she enjoys running, reading, socialising and frequent trips to
the theatre.

 | Practice Secretaries
Gillian Wright joined the practice in 1989 after having passed the
AMSPAR Medical Secretarial Course at Cauldon College. Gillian is secretary to Dr Turner,
Dr Johnston and Dr Bender. Her duties include typing referrals,
dealing with insurance requests and communicating
with the hospital, whether it be chasing results or arranging
appointments. Gillian also registers new patients and deals with
incoming/outgoing patient medical records. Gillian, along with her
colleague, Lara, coordinates the new hospital referral/appointment system
called "Choose and book" which includes online referrals and
online booking of appointments. She also recalls patients to the CHD/Spirometry
clinics.
Lara Swingewood has worked at the practice since 1990 after
leaving college where she completed a two year AMSPAR diploma coursed
to become a medical secretary. Since that time she has completed
Level 1 and Intermediate Level 2 in sign language. She
works alongside Gillian dealing with the new hospital patient referral
and booking system called Choose and Book. She is the secretary
to Dr Butcher, Dr Bokhari and Dr Aitken, also dealing with any insurance
reports etc completed by these particular doctors. She is also
responsible for the call and recall of cervical smear, arranging post
natal appointments and various other office admin duties which may
arise. She is responsible for any IT issues within the practice

 | Practice Data Input Clerk
Denise Williams has been with
the practice since October 1999. Denise works behind the scenes
summarising patients' notes and transferring information from paper records
onto the computer system.
