In
recent years the Government have made a number of changes in Primary Care
which mean that we are not the only route to getting help directly.
Instead of making appointments with us you might also wish to consider
other primary services.
Physiotherapy Direct Access Service Telephone
Physio
Direct is a brand new service launched in Staffordshire Moorlands Primary
Care Trust in September 2005
This is a telephone service set up
to provide early advice and management for people with back, neck,
joint or muscular problems caused by injury or illness.
Please
telephone the Physiotherapist yourself and not ask someone to call on your
behalf. Telephone lines are
only open during these hours:
Monday - Friday
8.30am-4.30pm 01782 427014
Who will you speak to?
A qualified, state registered Physiotherapist who is a member of the
Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
How long will the call take? Approximately 10-20 minutes
What will happen when you
phone?
The physiotherapist will ask you questions about yourself and the problem
that you have called about. The process will be quicker if you have
thought about your answers before you call: For
example:
 | How does the problem affect you? |
 | What eases/increases your pain? |
 | General questions about your health
and what medications you are taking
|
What will happen after your call?
The physiotherapist will offer advice on
ways of helping you to manage the problem. This may involve:
 |
Verbal/written advice/or exercises |
 |
If the physiotherapist feels it is
necessary they will invite you to attend for a physical assessment |
 |
You may be advised to contact your
GP or seek further medical help |
How to help yourself whilst waiting:
General advice for aches and pains...
 |
Rest new injuries for the first 48
hours. After that you should try to progressively return to your
normal activities, unless you have been advised not to by a doctor or
pain increases and does not settle within a few hours of the activity. |
 |
If you persevere with your exercises
and normal activities even if they are difficult to do, you may
prevent longterm problems. |
General advice for Hot and Cold.....
 |
For stiff muscles/joints heat may
help |
 |
For sore muscles/joints and swelling
cold may help |
 |
Never lie onto heat or ice packs as
you may damage your skin, rather, put them on you |
 |
Always put a dry cloth when using
heat and a damp cloth when using ice between the heat/ice and your
skin |
 |
The maximum time for application of
heat/ice is 30 minutes x6 per day |
 |
The above advice will reduce the
chance of you damaging skin |
 |
Never apply hot/cold treatment if
you have poor circulation or poor sensation |
General exercise advice...
The latest research suggests that almost
any physical activity (walking, gardening, swimming, cycling, going to the
gym) may help you to manage your aches and pains and promote positive
changes in your health.
Exercise has been proven to help:
 |
Stress, anxiety and depression |
 |
Diabetes, heart disease, high
cholesterol and blood pressure |
 |
Giving up smoking |
 |
Obesity |
 |
Arthritis and osteoporosis |
Physiotherapy Direct can give you

We provide a safe environment for adults over the age of 16 to attend and
work towards their recovery. We encourage and motivate people to
move on with their lives at their own pace. We concentrate on self
esteem and confidence building using local amenities and services.
We provide a meal four times a week and one day at BRICCS, the local
community cafe who provide a hot meal. As a fully service user
involved service we encourage everyone to say what they would like and we
ensure at all times that individuals are listened to. We are funded
for the next three years by Social Services and the Health
Authority. People can be referred via a professional or self
refer. The only criteria we have is that individuals must have a
primary diagnosis of mental illness.
Manager: Henry Carville
Community Mental Health Worker: Allison Hobson
