Fit for the Future

The Fit for the Future programme for North Staffordshire is a forward-thinking drive to improve the health and everyday lives of the people in this area. Its aim is to move many services out of the hospitals into the local communities, as well as building new hospitals at the City General and Haywood sites with state of the art facilities to provide specialist skills and treatment when needed.

This Fit for the Future programme is designed to take into account the opinions and wishes of the Patients, Public and the NHS equally. To see how you can help shape this huge change in the way the NHS works for you click on the link below:

What will change?

  • Health promotion - more support to help people to stay healthy, stop smoking and lead more active lifestyles.
  • New, modern facilities - larger health centres at Biddulph, Shelton, Benitlee, Milehouse, Cobridge and Meir where, GP treatment, social care and community services can be provided.
  • Community Diagnostics - improved use of skills and services at community hospitals like Bradwell, Longton, Leek, Cheadle and the Haywood so that most people can have tests done without needing to travel to the major hospital UHNS.
  • Walk-in Centre - the redeveloped Haywood Hospital will provide a new Walk-in Centre to treat minor injuries and illnesses.
  • Long Term Healthcare - more active involvement with people who have long-term conditions to help them stay independent by using modern techniques like telemedicine.
  • Outpatients - 118,000 appointments and specialist consultations carried out in local communities instead of at the major hospital, UHNS.
  • Intermediate Care - more beds in the local community so people can recover or receive treatment in a more appropriate place than the major hospital, UHNS.

Brand new hospital - a new, state-of-the-art University Hospital of North Staffordshire , providing the most up-to-date treatments in the best possible environment.
