Ante-natal care is
commenced when a patient attends the surgery to confirm her pregnancy
with a GP. Once this has been documented they are referred on to
the Midwife who takes over ante-natal care from then on unless a patient
needs to see a GP in between.
The Midwife arranges
to visit the patient at home for booking, this usually takes around 1
hour and includes giving the patient leaflets, health advice etc.
At this stage the patient is usually between 6 10 weeks gestation.
A referral to the Hospital is also done at this stage and arrangements
for a 12 week scan are also arranged.
The patients are
then followed up at regular intervals unless there are any problems and
they need to be seen sooner. These intervals are as follows:-
 |
6
weeks for blood tests
|
 |
22 weeks
|
 |
28 weeks for
repeat blood tests
|
 |
32 weeks
|
 |
35 weeks
|
 |
37 weeks
|
 |
then weekly
until delivery. |
Once the baby has
been born the patient and baby continue to be seen by the Midwife for up
to 4 weeks if appropriate. If the Midwife feels that the patient
needs to see a GP a house call/appointment is requested. If the
baby has been discharged without having a 24 paediatric check, mum is
telephoned and invited to bring the baby to the surgery so that this can
be done.
