Ante Natal Clinic

The ante natal clinic is held in the practice on Tuesday afternoons and is run by the Midwife, Sister L. Beswick, with a doctor available if needed. Our aim is to provide a personal and efficient service throughout pregnancy, delivery and post natal care. We would ask patients to make an appointment as early as possible i.e. as soon as pregnancy is confirmed, so that we can plan the best possible care for you.

Ante-natal care is commenced when a patient attends the surgery to confirm her pregnancy with a GP.  Once this has been documented they are referred on to the Midwife who takes over ante-natal care from then on unless a patient needs to see a GP in between.

The Midwife arranges to visit the patient at home for booking, this usually takes around 1 hour and includes giving the patient leaflets, health advice etc.  At this stage the patient is usually between 6 – 10 weeks gestation.  A referral to the Hospital is also done at this stage and arrangements for a 12 week scan are also arranged.

The patients are then followed up at regular intervals unless there are any problems and they need to be seen sooner.  These intervals are as follows:-

6 weeks – for blood tests

22 weeks

28 weeks – for repeat blood tests

32 weeks

35 weeks

37 weeks

then weekly until delivery.

Once the baby has been born the patient and baby continue to be seen by the Midwife for up to 4 weeks if appropriate.  If the Midwife feels that the patient needs to see a GP a house call/appointment is requested.  If the baby has been discharged without having a 24 paediatric check, mum is telephoned and invited to bring the baby to the surgery so that this can be done.

Coronary Heart Disease Clinic

In patients with angina or a history of heart attacks we need to measure things like cholesterol and blood pressure on a regular basis.  If these are not being done whilst having regular checks with the doctor we may ask you to attend our CHD clinic to organise these and review your medication and condition.

Respiratory Clinic

Patients with asthma and chronic obstructive airways disease can expect their medication and condition to be reviewed by our nurse trained in respiratory conditions on a regular basis.  We will usually invite you in when your treatment and medication needs to be reviewed.

Spirometry Clinic

Spirometry is a specialised investigation for chronic obstructive airways disease.  If the doctor or nurse feels we need to get this investigation we will arrange it by appointment with Sister Salt.  It is a non-invasive "blowing" test taking up to 45 minutes.  It helps us decide on the severity and best form of treatment for your condition.

Diabetic Clinic

Doctor Johnston and Sister Pickles run the diabetic clinics between them.  The doctor clinics can be booked well ahead but Sister Pickle's appointments can only be made a couple of weeks beforehand.  We have also access to a specialist diabetic nurse, Sister Newell, who is able to see patients and advise us on more difficult to manage patients.  She is particularly useful and well trained for patients beginning on insulin.
